As a principal part of SRHAC’s mission to combat homelessness, we operate a single room occupancy facility named Plaza Arms on Chicago’s West Side and Belvidere House in Belvidere, IL. We offer affordable below-market-rate rental units ─ combined with rent subsidies, when available ─ to low-income single adults. SRHAC expects to acquire more properties in and around Chicago to be able to house and offer services in other communities.
SRHAC-owned and operated SRO facilities offer a dignified, respectful, and “non-judgmental” “resident-driven” housing approach, utilizing a mixture of “housing-first” and “harm-reduction” models. SRHAC encourages residents to respect each other and work together.
A SRHAC social worker or outside case management may work with select SRO residents to assist them, based upon an individual’s circumstances and special needs.
Plaza Arms, 501 N. Central Avenue, Chicago, IL
This building was formally the Austin YMCA. With 300 rooms, it is the second largest SRO in Chicago. Each clean, private room contains a bed, dresser, refrigerator, microwave, and a closet.
Rooms are available for single men and women—no couples or families. Before anyone is allowed to move into Plaza Arms, the Building Manager checks the person’s background. Persons who have committed sexual offenses, major felonies, or major assaults are not accepted as tenants.
The building provides separate communal bathrooms and shower rooms for men and women. The front desk is manned 24 hours a day. Parking is available for an additional fee. The building does not have an elevator or laundry facilities for tenants.

Belvidere House, 226 N. State Street, Belvidere, IL
In 2018, SRHAC acquired a 45-unit SRO facility in suburban Belvidere. It provides decent, low-income, affordable, permanent housing units for single adult men and woman in a protective and quiet environment. These clean, private rooms contain a closet, bed, dresser, refrigerator, and microwave. This facility is now undergoing renovation.
A rental application may be completed at our office at 226 N. State St., Belvidere, IL, from 9:00am-3:00pm, Monday-Friday, except on major holidays.
